MBTA Token

13 Mar 2016

Head’s up: this week’s post is a bit off topic.

I don’t like carrying change around, so whenever I get home I dump whatever I have in my pockets in a jar on my dresser. Once it’s full, I take it to a Coinstar machine.

Inevitably, each time I do this the machine rejects a few coins. Sometimes they’re just seriously beat up, to the point where the machine can’t tell what they are. More often they’re Canadian. This past week, the machine spit this back out:

An MBTA token (from the back)

An MBTA token (from the front)

The MBTA stopped selling these in 2006, so this thing has been masquerading as US currency for a decade. Shows you how much attention people pay to their change.
